Motorola - Wallet Clam concept
This was done as part of Motorola CXD Collections in 2006. The annual Collections was a chance for the entire design organization to work on conceptual products and services. Some of these were entirely blue-sky and meant as provocations. Others were more grounded and presented as proposals for the roadmap. In 2006, I worked on 2 concepts - the Wallet Clam seen here and the concept that was the precursor to the Motorola Evoke QA4.
In some ways this was the antithesis of RAZR with its hard edges and progressive use of metal. This concept is unapologetically plastic, soft with generous curvature but with precise cuts revealing material transitions.
Exterior housings were meant to be double-shot with a tinted hard coat for an iridescent appearance.
The triple-shot keypad would have used capacitive keys with all features and icons molded into the housing.
Even though the concept was never picked up for roadmap development, it was used as a reference design for several products designed by other designers.
